Bartling, Eduard Arnold
Bartling, Eduard Arnold
Engineer, newspaper publisher, member of the Reichstag and Landtag
Born: 19.06.1845 in Lenhausen (district of Meschede)
Died: 03.08.1927 in Wiesbaden
Bartling was a very successful entrepreneur in civil engineering, railroad construction, opencast coal mining and designed machines for mining, among other things. He received his training at the Holzminden construction school and the Hanover Polytechnic. From 1882, he lived in Wiesbaden.
Bartling was also an influential member of the National Liberal Party, for which he was an unsalaried member of the Wiesbaden magistrate from 1891-1900. From 1903-07 and from 1912-18, Bartling represented the Wiesbaden constituency in the Reichstag. In the 1907 election, he was surprisingly defeated by Gustav Lehmann, the candidate of the Social Democratic Party. For a time, Bartling was also a member of the Prussian state parliament. To keep it alive, Bartling bought the organ of the National Liberal Party, the "Nationalzeitung", and in 1905 also the "Rheinischer Kurier", which he later merged with the "Wiesbadener General-Anzeiger" to form the "Neue Wiesbadener Zeitung" and integrated into the "Wiesbadener Verlagsanstalt", in which he was the main shareholder and exercised decisive influence. With his papers, Bartling fought against the Wiesbadener Tagblatt, which he accused of having prevented his election to the Reichstag in 1907. Bartling distinguished himself with charitable foundations for Wiesbaden and Sonnenberg.
A privy councillor of commerce, Bartling died in Wiesbaden and is buried in the North Cemetery.
