On the occasion of his 50th birthday, Bandel was honored as "one of the most deserving men in Wiesbaden sport". He grew up in Hermannstraße, learned the trade of a businessman and eventually reached the position of authorized signatory in the construction company he had joined as an apprentice. He began his sporting career before the Second World War with the Catholic sports youth club DJK Wiesbaden. After the war, he joined the Freie Turnerschaft. He was head of department there from 1948-54. He was an active handball player until 1955. In 1956, he was elected to the position of district match keeper for the Wiesbaden handball district, a position he held for many years. He was also a member of the Wiesbaden sports deputation. He received numerous awards for his services to the sport of handball, including the State Sports Association's Letter of Honor and the City of Wiesbaden's Sports Plaque.
