Ammann attended elementary school in Braubach am Rhein. He was then a pupil at the Gymnasium Philippinum in Weilburg an der Lahn from 1850-59 and studied law in Heidelberg as well as classical and modern philology in Bonn and Göttingen.
From 1864 until his retirement in 1890 he worked as a teacher, from 1877 as head teacher, at the Royal Grammar School in Wiesbaden; in 1899 he was appointed grammar school professor.
Ammann wrote poems and prose works such as "Der Rochus-Berg bei Bingen" (1893), "Der Rheingau und seine Weine" (1899) and "Klänge vom Rhein" (1904).
