Amann studied chemistry at the Technical University of Aachen, graduating with a diploma and a doctorate. He then worked at Chemische Werke Albert in Biebrich and became Technical Director. Around 1938, he set up a branch plant in England. At the beginning of the Second World War, he took early retirement.

Amann was also an honorary city councillor in Wiesbaden and was particularly committed to the interests of citizens in need during the post-war years.
