Albert, Carl Paul

Graduate engineer, racing cyclist

Born: 16.02.1876 in Biebrich

died: 15.05.1903 near Ingelheim

Albert, son of Heinrich Johann Albert, began studying engineering at the Polytechnic in Berlin after graduating from the Realgymnasium in Wiesbaden. It was there that he discovered his passion for bicycle racing. In 1897/1898, he won the "German Grand Prix", among others, and also became world amateur sprint champion over 1000 m in Vienna in 1898. At the end of the 19th century, he was one of the most successful cyclists of his time. However, his career was brought to a premature end by his father's objection, who considered the sport too dangerous. Albert then turned to motor sports, bought a racing car and received a racing license from the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft. On the journey from Paris to the international long-distance race "Paris-Madrid" in 1903, he had a fatal accident in his racing car near Ingelheim.
