Wiesbaden Music & Art School
The Wiesbaden Music & Art School emerged from the merger of the Wiesbaden Conservatory and the Günzel Music Seminar in 1991.
The Wiesbadener Musik- & Kunstschule (WMK) is a non-profit organization funded by the city of Wiesbaden. The institute is a member of the Association of German Music Schools. Approximately 55 percent of the annual operating costs are covered by grants from the City of Wiesbaden and the State of Hesse.
The chairperson of the sponsoring association is the head of the cultural department of the City of Wiesbaden. The school was established in 1991 through the merger of the Wiesbaden Conservatory (founded in 1888) and the Günzel Music Seminar. With well over 3,000 students, it is one of the most important cultural institutions in the state capital. The WMK has been located on Schillerplatz since 2000. It has over 50 classrooms there, as well as rehearsal and concert halls. Around 80 permanently employed teachers in eight departments give lessons in all common musical instruments as well as singing.
The WMK's offerings range from classical to popular music. Individual and group lessons are supplemented by numerous ensemble subjects (big band, jazz formations, rock bands, youth symphony orchestras, wind ensembles, chamber music groups, music theory and so on). Special offers are aimed at adult music lovers.
The school organizes the annual regional competition "Jugend musiziert".
