The war memorial at the Dotzheim cemetery was built and dedicated in 1928 in honor of the fallen of the First World War. The memorial was planned by Wiesbaden architect Rudolf Joseph. The sculptor Arnold Hensler, who also lived here, was responsible for the design and execution of the work.

The memorial itself was designed in imitation of a medieval church choir and laid out as a semi-circular, solid quarry stone wall, which is pierced by generously shaped arcades. Several end pillars close off the whole at the top, on which the inscription "Germans honor your heroes and do not forget the dear dead" is inscribed. The lower end is formed by three steps leading to a plinth. On this stands a group of figures with the years 1914-1918 engraved at their feet. The group of figures consists of two figures, mother and child, and serves as a reminder of the many widows and orphans left behind by the war.

According to a second interpretation, which was also put forward in the contemporary press, the statue was a reference to the willingness of fathers to make sacrifices for their families.

The monument itself served Hensler as a design for a life-size group of figures in the war memorial chapel in Möllingen (now part of the municipality of Kölbingen, Westerwald district, Rhineland-Palatinate), which was erected in the same year as the one in Dotzheim.
