Grobecker, Ewald
Court actor
Born: April 9, 1825 in Spandau
died: January 26, 1897 in Wiesbaden
Ewald Grobecker was destined to be a businessman, but he was drawn to the theater. Initially, he toured Brandenburg and Mecklenburg with acting groups before landing his first permanent engagement in Danzig.
In 1853, Grobecker followed the call to Wiesbaden to the ducal-Nassau court theater (from 1866 the royal theater), where he worked for more than an age as a declared favorite of the audience. Above all in cozy or comic character roles, he delighted the people of Wiesbaden and their spa guests with his unsurpassed mastery. Parade roles were that of Adam in Kleist's "The Broken Jug", that of the innkeeper in "Minna von Barnhelm", also by Kleist, or that of the patriarch in Lessing's "Nathan the Wise". Grobecker also played serious roles to great effect, such as Vansen in Goethe's "Egmont".
Numerous guest tours throughout Germany and to Russia not only increased his fame, but also the contents of his wallet, which was not completely empty after his marriage to Paula, a daughter of the Wiesbaden cloth merchant Jacob Guyer. Grobecker is buried in the North Cemetery.
