Homonale - gay and lesbian film festival

Together with the Department of Culture, the Come out e.V. association organized a gay and lesbian film festival at the Caligari FilmBühne for the first time in 2001. The "Homonale" takes place every year on a weekend in January. The program includes current and historical films on the subject of homosexuality, e.g. "Vier Minuten" with Hannah Herzsprung and Monika Bleibtreu, "Mama Mia!" in the karaoke version for singing along or the Teddy Award winner of the Berlinale 2010 "The Kids Are All Right". On Sunday morning, there is traditionally a Film & Breakfast event in cooperation with the Wiesbadener Kinofestival e.V.

German Television Thriller Festival

The first German Television Thriller Festival took place from March 10 to 12, 2005 at the Caligari FilmBühne. It was organized by the Wiesbaden Cultural Office and the Medienzentrum Wiesbaden e.V. Bettina Buchler was commissioned to manage the festival. The jury had to evaluate nine current TV crime thrillers in order to award the "German TV Thriller Prize" for the first time. The members of the jury for the first festival were Rosemarie Fendel († actress), Doris Gercke (writer), Martin Kinkel (director), Prof. Dr. Thomas Koebner (film scholar) and Helmut Schimanski (former ZDF editor). Since film and television productions are always teamwork, all those involved in the winning film should be rewarded. The main prize therefore consists not only of a trophy, but also a depot of 1,000 liters of Wiesbaden wine. The first film team to receive this prize was the team of "Tatort - Herzversagen" by Stephan Falk (screenplay) and Thomas Freundner (screenplay and director), produced by Hessischer Rundfunk. In addition to the main prize, two special prizes are awarded annually for outstanding achievements by actors, directors, cameramen or authors. The Audience Award goes to a television thriller chosen by a jury of readers of the Wiesbadener Kurier.

The long TV crime night from Friday evening to Saturday morning, in which all the competition films are shown again one after the other, has become a tradition. In addition to the competition, an annual symposium is offered for trade visitors and interested parties. For the first time in 2007, Wednesday became Crime Thriller Day, extending the festival from three days to four. A special highlight was the opening premiere of "Tatort - Unter uns", which took place outside of the competition and for which the successful director Margarethe von Trotta traveled to the festival. Since then, the FernsehKrimi-Festival has taken place every year at the beginning of March from Wednesday to Saturday and has become increasingly popular with audiences and representatives of the television industry.

In 2010, film scholars Christine Kopf and Barbara Dierksen took over the management of the festival. Almost all the directors of the ten competition films, including Max Färberböck, Christiane Balthasar and Florian Kern, traveled to this edition of the FernsehKrimi-Festival. Andrea Sawatzki, Matthias Schweighöfer and many others were among the guests of honor at the 2010 Television Crime Film Festival. The 2011 German Television Crime Film Award went to "Tatort - Nie wieder frei sein" (Bavarian Broadcasting) by Christian Zübert (director) and Dinah Marthe Golch (screenplay). The special prizes were awarded to Lisa Wagner for her acting performance in "Tatort - Nie wieder frei sein" and to Lars Becker for directing "Amigo - Bei Ankunft Tod" (ZDF). The Audience Award went to "Das letzte Schweigen" (ZDF/arte) by Baran bo Odar (writer and director), based on the novel "Das Schweigen" by Jan Costin Wagner. Ulrich Tukur traveled to the screening of "Tatort - Wie einst Lilly". At the award ceremony, hosted by Maren Kroymann, he gave an enchanting and unforgettable performance of evergreens from the 1920s and 1930s with his "Rhythmus Boys".

The main winner of the German Television Crime Award 2013 was the WDR production "Mord in Eberswalde" by Stephan Wagner (director). Special prizes went to Alexander Adolph for the screenplay for "Tatort - Der tiefe Schlaf" (BR) and Isabel Kleefeld for her outstanding directing work on "Im Netz" (WDR). "Bella Block - Unter den Linden" (ZDF) by Katrin Bühlig (screenplay) and Martin Enlen (director) was awarded the Audience Award 2013.

Following various personnel changes, this year's FernsehKrimi-Festival will take place for the first time under the direction of Cathrin Ehrlich from March 11 to 16, 2014. Ulrich Tukur has taken over the patronage of the festival this year.

Workshop of the Young Film Scene

The Workshop of the Young Film Scene is one of the most important festivals for young filmmakers in Germany. The age range of participants extends from 14 to 26 years, the spectrum starts with the first school films and ends with works at film school level. The Bundesverband Jugend und Film e.V. (BJF) has been organizing the workshop since the mid-1960s, and since 1985 the Wilhelm-Kempf-Haus in Wiesbaden-Naurod has been the venue - with an excursion to Wiesbaden city centre, where a film programme is shown on Saturday evening in the Caligari FilmBühne, one of the most beautiful cinemas in Germany.

Around 140 people take part in the Young Film Scene Workshop every year, and around 70 films are shown and discussed from Friday evening to Whit Monday. For many filmmakers, the presentation at the workshop is their first screening in front of a larger audience; the peer-to-peer exchange during the three-day event gives them important feedback and motivates them to be even more creative. The film screenings are supplemented by short professional workshops on various film-making topics. The Young Film Scene Workshop offers young filmmakers a springboard that leads many of them to a career in the media. The workshop thus provides a unique form of support for young talent. In addition, the event is embedded in the BJF's Young Film Scene, a communication and information network that supports up-and-coming filmmakers in a variety of ways and continuously outside of the events.

Open-air film festival

Every year in July/August, there is open-air cinema with free admission on four weekends in the Reisinger and Herbert grounds in front of Wiesbaden's main train station. The "Die Bilderwerfer e.V." association has been organizing the cinema fun under the stars since 1998. The popular open-air cinema on the green meadow shows selected cult and arthouse films every Thursday to Saturday. Short films are presented in the supporting program. The gastronomic offer rounds off the program with food and drinks. Filmfest visitors make themselves comfortable on blankets and camping chairs they have brought with them, and many also bring picnic baskets. On beautiful summer evenings, up to 4,000 film fans gather on the meadow. The forerunners of today's open-air film festival were the "Wiesbaden Film Nights", which were organized by the initiative of the same name from 1986 to 1997.

Atlantis Nature and Environment Film Festival

The first edition of this film festival took place in October 2007 at the Caligari FilmBühne. It was organized by the Wiesbaden Cultural Office and directed by film scholar Uwe Stellberger. Outstanding current documentaries as well as classics of the nature film and environmental film genres were shown. The program was intended to appeal to young and old alike and children's and family films therefore formed a separate focus from the outset.

In 2008, Atlantis was expanded to include a competition with two prizes. The first winners were "Menschen, Träume, Taten" by Andreas Stiglmayr and "Räumkommando Riesenratte" by Herbert Ostwald. Since 2010, the Atlantis Film Festival has been held annually at the end of September. The 2010 Atlantis jury consisted of: Peter Schamoni (director, producer), Bettina Buchler (director of the German Film and Media Rating, FBW), Erica von Moeller (director, author), Martin Gessner (producer) and Hannes Karnick (author, director, producer). The jury selected the following films from the 2010 Atlantis competition entries: 1st prize was awarded to "Yellow Cake - Die Lüge von der sauberen Energie" by Joachim Tschirner, 2nd prize went to Werner Boote for "Plastic Planet" and 3rd prize went equally to "Die Nomaden von Kirgisistan" by Wolfgang Mertin and "Der Schatz vom Kiwusee" by Christoph Würzburger. Just like the legendary island kingdom of Atlantis thousands of years ago, the "Atlantis Nature and Environmental Film Festival" eventually had to come to an end and so the last edition of the popular and successful festival took place in 2011.
