Czysz, Walter

Pharmacist, local historian

Born: March 5, 1925 in Wiesbaden
died: March 8, 2007 in Wiesbaden

After leaving school, Walter Czysz volunteered for the air force, where he received training as a bomber pilot and was used for reconnaissance flights. After the war, he studied pharmacy in Mainz. He also pursued a broad range of further education, with a focus on history. In 1948, he married Brigitte Flößner; the marriage produced three sons.

In 1963, he was employed at the Fresenius Institute (Chemisches Laboratorium Fresenius), where he worked until his retirement in 1992, primarily as an assistant to the editor of the Zeitschrift für Analytische Chemie (Journal of Analytical Chemistry), in addition to editorial work for papers and book reviews in the field of chemical analysis. He was also co-author of several handbooks published by Fresenius.

He is the author of excellently researched books on the Klarenthalconvent, the Sonnenberg castle site, the development of Wiesbaden from a Roman spa to a world-class spa town, the history of the Fresenius Institute and the life of Heinrich Anton Leichtweiß.

Numerous smaller publications appeared in newspapers and magazines. The Wiesbaden daily newspapers published several series of articles by him. This led to his appointment to the Historical Commission for Nassau, the award of the Silver Citizens' Medal of the City of Wiesbaden in 1993 and the Medal of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2003.

He had been a member of the Nassau Society for Natural History since 1962 and was elected 2nd Chairman in 1993. He wrote two essays on the Fresenius family and company and three articles on the history of Wiesbaden's thermal springs for the association's yearbooks (Jahrbücher des Nassauischen Vereins für Naturkunde).

To mark the 175th anniversary of the association, he wrote the chronicle of the association, which was published as volume 125 of the yearbooks in 2004. In the same year, he was made an honorary member of the association. He is buried in the cemetery in Wiesbaden-Sonnenberg.
