Working group of disabled people's organizations in Wiesbaden and interest group of disabled people (AK)
The Working Group of Disabled People's Organizations in Wiesbaden has been in existence since 1974 with over 35 members. It successfully campaigns for the interests of people with disabilities in society and politics.
The Wiesbaden Working Group of Disabled People's Organizations and Interest Groups (AK) is an association of more than 35 organizations that work together to promote the interests of people with disabilities in Wiesbaden and the surrounding area.
In 1974, on the initiative of Josef Pretnar, self-help groups of people with disabilities, including "Club 66" and "Fraternität", came together in Wiesbaden to work together with great commitment for the interests of people with disabilities.
The first chairman was Albert Heim, who was decisively supported by Ingrid Reiß, a senior employee of the Wiesbaden Caritas Association (Caritas-Verband Wiesbaden Rheingau-Taunus). In 1998, Ms. Reiß worked with the working group to develop the structure, tasks and membership for the rules of procedure and systematically developed and promoted cooperation. In particular, connections to other organizations in the state of Hesse and to the committees of the state capital Wiesbaden were also promoted. Ms. Reiß herself was later elected chairperson of the working group and in 2003 Joachim Mast, himself visually impaired since 1996, replaced Ingrid Reiß as chairperson. Joachim Mast deepened the connections to the other organizations by using the new communication channels.
The working group sees itself in particular as a discussion forum and mouthpiece for those affected vis-à-vis the municipal authorities, including parliamentary bodies, in order to address suggestions, wishes and demands in the interests of the disabled for an independent, equal life in our society to those responsible in the city of Wiesbaden and, if necessary, beyond, and also to demand them emphatically.
Conversely, the AK offers municipal bodies a central point of contact for all matters relating to disability work, in particular the various disabilities of those affected who are members of the AK. The organizations represent their own original interests themselves; on the other hand, they can exchange information, pursue interests together and support each other in doing so. The delegates meet regularly in the town hall for public meetings and also take part in the meetings of the municipal parliamentary committees in order to represent interests relevant to people with disabilities. In addition, municipal and state developments as well as information in the field of people with disabilities are taken up, developed and used for their own goals. Participation and collaboration in various committees of the local authorities and the state of Hesse is common practice.
With its direct knowledge of the requirements with regard to the goals of accessibility in terms of mobility as well as information and communication (BIK), the working group is available to the planning authorities as a point of contact, with a certain focus on public spaces. Trusting cooperation with the Office for Social Work and the Parliamentary Committee for Social Affairs in Wiesbaden is a matter of course, despite the clarity of the demands.
The work of the working group is voluntary and the motto of the European Year of People with Disabilities since 2003 applies: "Not without us about us, but with us."
The need for mobile and informative accessibility for people with disabilities is being driven forward by numerous initiatives within the city and in the surrounding area. Numerous examples, such as the realization of accessible facilities in public places, e.g. in public transport, theaters, cinemas and the city council chamber of the town hall, testify to the successful work of the working group. The blind tactile model of the historic pentagon, which has been on display in Marktstraße since 2011, is also the result of the working group's initiative.
