Lord Mayor
In Hesse, the Lord Mayor is elected directly by the citizens. His term of office is six years.
Wiesbaden's Lord Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende was inaugurated on Saturday, June 29, 2019, at City Hall. His first working day was July 2, 2019. The next election for Lord Mayor will take place on Sunday, March 9, 2025, with a run-off election on March 30.
He chairs the meetings of the municipal council, prepares its resolutions and ensures their implementation, unless the department heads are directly commissioned. The Lord Mayor manages and supervises the administration as the superior of all employees. He can assign tasks and responsibilities within the municipal council directly to city councillors.
In urgent cases, the Lord Mayor can order decisions to be made without the municipal council having passed a corresponding resolution. However, he must inform the municipal council of this immediately. Even if a resolution of the municipal council violates the law, it is the duty of the Lord Mayor to object. The same applies if a resolution jeopardizes the welfare of the city. The objection has a suspensive effect. This means that the resolution may not be implemented until the municipal council has decided a second time. If no agreement is reached, the Lord Mayor can appeal to the City Council.
Contracts that are of particular importance are signed by the Lord Mayor and another representative of the municipal council. The Lord Mayor also represents the city at important events.
