About the film: Shot in 1960 during the real Mainz Carnival and with the participation of the Mainz Carnival Association, the film features all kinds of local color. The film was not only shot in Mainz, but also in the Rheingau in Hallgarten and Reichartshausen Castle in Oestrich-Winkel. Carl Zuckmayer, author of the 1959 novel of the same name, was born in Nackenheim, Rheinhessen. The then 21-year-old actor Götz George was a promising young star of German post-war cinema at the time the film was shot and had received the Federal Film Award the year before.
