Biebrich Palace
The magnificent three-winged baroque building, built between 1700 and 1750 directly on the banks of the Rhine, was the residence of the princes and later dukes of Nassau.
At the end of the 17th century, the Prince of Nassau-Idstein wanted to build a simple garden shed on his property on the Rhine. Actually. But then he liked it so much that he soon had more and more extensions added - and the cottage eventually became a three-winged Baroque palace. Had a visit to Versailles perhaps gone to the prince's head? In any case, Biebrich Palace was soon nicknamed "Versailles on the Rhine"; as with the great model, the magnificent building was complemented by a no less impressive park. Designed as a French landscape garden, of course, including a small maze and a baroque hedge theater.
The later princes and dukes of Nassau also felt at home here and Biebrich Palace was their main residence until 1841. But with the end of the duchy, the magnificent "Versailles on the Rhine" also fell into disrepair. Most of the interior furnishings were sold, and the recently built greenhouse was also broken up - and became the basis for the Palm Garden in nearby Frankfurt am Main, which is still very popular today. "Rat Castle on the Rhine" was the palace's new nickname in the mid-20th century, and the east wing was completely destroyed during the Second World War.
It was not until the 1960s that the new owner, the state of Hesse, restored the baroque jewel. Today, it is home to various authorities and is often used for celebrations and receptions; the former chapel and, in summer, the large outdoor terrace are open as a café and restaurant.

Biebrich Palace Park
Created in 1708 as a symmetrical Baroque garden, Biebrich Palace Park was transformed into an English landscape park in 1817 by the famous garden architect Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell, who also designed the English Garden in Munich. At the back of the park is the artificial Mosburg pond with the Mosburg castle - once the ruins of a former moated castle from the 13th century on whose foundations a romantic residential castle was built by Duke Friedrich August von Nassau at the beginning of the 19th century.
