Walk to the fulling mill
Watermill, orphanage, brewery, dance hall, dry cleaner and now: artists' quarter and excursion destination.
The Walkmühle in the north-east of Wiesbaden has had an impressive career. The highlight of the career so far: Today, the area is the most exciting creative hub in the state capital. It wasn't an easy road to get there: in the 1980s, Wiesbaden artists moved into the then dilapidated industrial wasteland and managed to win the city's support for their ideas.
Today, the Walkmühle artists' association organizes exhibitions, readings and workshops here and rents out twelve studio spaces. "
Many buildings, such as the brewery and brewhouse, are still reminiscent of the time when beer was brewed in the Walkmühle. The buildings have been extensively renovated in recent years. The site has gained so much charm that restaurants and winegrowers have also discovered the Walkmühle for themselves. Vinothek Vinotto has moved into rooms in an atmospheric vault, serving delicious antipasti to accompany its wine, including outside on the terrace in fine weather. And just a few meters away, the twins Jan and David Schäfer show how they imagine sustainable viticulture with their wine and sparkling wine manufactory hurra. Using the grapes from their vineyard in Oestrich-Winkel, the two not only make sparkling wine, but also excellent hopped wines. Highly recommended: the "hurra-Sundays" with wine, sparkling wine and tarte flambée.
The Walkmühle is a unique place for Wiesbaden," says Wulf Winckelmann, who is chairman of the association and has been involved in the transformation of the area from the very beginning. "There are many exhibition venues in the city, but this juxtaposition of free art and the creative scene is something unique here".
The most beautiful path from the center of Wiesbaden up to the Walkmühle leads through the Dürer complex. Opened over 100 years ago, the landscaped park with streams and small ponds stretches like a pointed wedge along the Walkmühle valley up to the old boiler house. So if you want to combine art, pleasure and a walk in the countryside, the Walkmühle is the perfect destination.
