SDG "Sustainable consumption and production"
In Hessian: "Less is more"
What is it about and what does the SDG "Sustainable Consumption and Production" mean for the event industry?
SDG 12 stands for the responsible use of resources in (individual) consumption and production. This also includes the avoidance of waste, efficient recycling and the safe disposal of harmful substances as well as the use of recyclable materials, services and products.
By implementing sustainable practices, the event industry can make an important contribution to promoting a sustainable future.(Source tw-media.com (opens in a new tab))
How do we implement this?
✓ Integration of regional products:
- In our Tourist Information (opens in a new tab), we sell almost exclusively products from local and regional production. We organize monthly events at the Wiesbaden Tourist Information where local companies are invited to present and sell their products. ("Wiesbaden Trifft sich (opens in a new tab)")
- Our catering partner at the RMCC "GAUL CATERING (opens in a new tab)" pursues a sustainable catering concept with the "Greenline", which integrates seasonal products, regional partners and vegetarian dishes that are freshly prepared in front of the guests at front cooking stations. Gaul has developed sustainability guidelines for its own company, suppliers and partners. These include guidelines on the procurement of food, the selection of suppliers, the reduction of waste and disposable products, water consumption, waste separation and many other sustainable points.
✓ Reduction of print products:
- Reduction of information to fewer print products
- Smaller print runs for all print products
- Printing on sustainable paper with FSC® certification
- Conversion from print product to digital product (e.g. Convention Wiesbaden Quarterly (opens in a new tab))
- Reduction of overview maps for all outdoor events organized by WICM GmbH (e.g. Rheingau Wine Week, Sternschnuppen Markt)
- Digital house tours via TEAMS or house tours with end devices, no handing out of hall plans or hall capacities
✓ Use of sustainable products in day-to-day business:
- Use of sustainable paper products
- Use of toilet paper with recycled content
- Procurement and use of sustainable workwear (material, quality)
- Environmentally friendly sanitary technologies by installing dry towel dispensers in all sanitary areas of the RMCC and the Kurhaus to avoid paper towel waste
- Trade fair material or banners etc. are purchased with the aim of reusability, so that purchases are used several times in different situations (e.g. use of the RMCC wellness oasis at events and trade fairs since 2018 and loan to customers)
- Organic coffee, organic milk, regional water in glass bottles for employees
✓ Reduction of waste:
- At major public events organized by WICM GmbH, market vendors, wine stands, catering stands, etc. are required to refrain from using disposable tableware and to use reusable options. This is integrated into the event announcements and the market regulations and is randomly checked during the events.
- Collection of recyclable materials in the company (batteries, fluorescent tubes, glasses, natural corks, crown caps, cell phones + accessories, pens, CD/DVD
✓ Collaboration in sustainable networks:
- Among other things, we are a member of the "Fair Procurement (opens in a new tab)" network, which takes fair and sustainable aspects into account in the supply chain
- CSR Regio.net (opens in a new tab)
✓ Sustainable procurement guidelines for tenders:
- Consideration of social criteria in the conditions of participation for award procedures (e.g. §21 of the Posted Workers Act, §98c of the Residence Act, §19 of the Minimum Wage Act, §21 of the Act to Combat Clandestine Employment, §22 of the Supply Chain Duty of Care Act, the existence of violations of applicable environmental, social or labor law obligations, obligation to pay collective bargaining and minimum wages in accordance with the Hessian Procurement and Collective Bargaining Act (HVTG), declaration of non-existence of a "reference to Russia")
- Proof of occupational health and safety
- Consideration of sustainability in the award criteria (e.g. production of poinsettias for the Christmas tree in the foyer, transportation distance for delivery services)
✓ Promotion of sustainable mobility:
- We support event planners in ensuring that guests and employees travel to and from Wiesbaden in an environmentally friendly way and use public transport or bicycles
- The RMCC's location within walking distance of Wiesbaden Central Station is particularly emphasized in sales talks
- Provision of discounted tickets for local public transport (e.g. DB event ticket)
- Centrality within Wiesbaden: event infrastructure such as hotels, venues, restaurants, city center and main train station are within walking distance
- Free job ticket for employees
