Questions and answers on illegal waste dumping

Litter in the countryside, whether in the city center, on green spaces or in the Wiesbaden forest, is unfortunately a common occurrence. The Environmental Advisory Service asks the waste experts at the Environmental Agency what action the city is taking against illegal dumping.

Armchairs, mattresses, chairs, tires, boxes and other bulky waste lie in a forest clearing.

Who takes care of illegally disposed waste?

In Wiesbaden, the city's environmental department is responsible. It ensures that illegal waste deposits are removed as quickly as possible. This applies to the city center, but also to the suburbs and outlying areas such as fields, meadows and forests. The waste disposal companies of the state capital of Wiesbaden, with whom the Environmental Agency works closely, are responsible for disposal.

What can citizens do?

Illegal waste can be reported to the Environmental Agency on 0611 312295 or 313742 and by e-mail to illegale-abfaellewiesbadende. Alternatively, the ELW cleanliness hotline on 0611 71531 will also accept reports of illegal dumping. City employees first check the report on site and look for clues about the person responsible or ask the neighbors in the area before the waste is collected.

What costs are incurred for the disposal of illegal waste?

The Environment Agency alone spends around 40,000 euros a year on this. However, the lion's share of the disposal of illegal waste deposits is borne by the waste disposal companies at around 400,000 euros per year.

How long does disposal take after a waste notification?

If the environment is at acute risk, for example in the case of used oil, used batteries or gas cylinders, disposal usually takes place on the same day. In other cases, it usually takes two to three days.

How many waste reports does the Environment Agency receive each year?

The Environment Agency receives more than 700 reports of illegal waste dumping every year.

What consequences await litter offenders?

Litter offenders must expect a fine of up to a maximum of 2,500 euros. If the city has already disposed of the waste, these costs will also be reclaimed from the polluter.
