Contaminated sites and soil protection

Construction workers in safety vests and helmets work on a building site with concrete foundations. One of the workers is lifting iron bars while another watches him. Concrete forms and construction documents lie on the ground.
Remediation of contaminated sites on the former site of the gasworks in Bahnhofstrasse

Pollutants that have entered the soil or groundwater due to careless handling of waste and production waste can pose a threat to human health and the environment.

  • For this reason, the City of Wiesbaden investigates and remediates urban areas suspected of being contaminated due to previous use. This avoids risks for citizens, prevents damage to the environment and increases planning security for construction measures

An important tool for this is the suspected site file, in which all known suspected sites are listed.

The so-called arsenic contamination area in the Bergkirchen district is a special feature of Wiesbaden: due to the medicinal springs and thermal waters, the natural occurrence of the pollutant arsenic in the soil is to be expected here.
