Southeast: opposites attract
The charm of Wiesbaden-Southeast lies in its exciting mix of tradition and modernity, as demonstrated by the glass Delta House next to Wiesbaden's 100-year-old main railway station.
Diversity and architecture
The residents of Südost, including members of the US armed forces in the "Housing Area" on the Hainerberg, live in a variety of residential areas. Worth seeing are the villas in City-Ost and along Biebricher Allee as well as the Dichterviertel with its Art Nouveau architecture. A striking building is the Lutherkirche on Gutenbergplatz; the Dreifaltigkeitskirche on Frauenlobstraße represents the Catholic counterpart. In the 1950s and 60s, Aufbau architecture shaped the district between Stresemann-Ring and Südfriedhof. Modern administrative buildings such as the Ministry of the Interior, the Federal Statistical Office and the DBV civil servants' insurance company border directly on quiet residential areas.
Leisure and sport
The Helmut-Schön-Sportpark on Berliner Straße invites you to take part in sporting activities. Wiesbaden has also been a professional soccer city since 2007: SV Wehen Wiesbaden plays its matches in the Brita-Arena. And in the newly built Wettiner Halle, the 400-metre indoor track provides ideal training conditions for track and field athletes.
Mainzer Straße
Along Mainzer Strasse, the urban redevelopment has created modern residential and office buildings as well as shopping facilities. The leisure and cultural park has been created around the listed water tower and the former slaughterhouse - a popular recreational area with the Schlachthof youth and cultural center. The Filmhaus of the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation is also based here and is dedicated to preserving Germany's film heritage.
Economy and authorities
In Wiesbaden-Southeast, modern service companies work side by side with state and federal authorities. The Justice and Administration Center on Mainzer Strasse, which opened in 2010, brings together all of Wiesbaden's judicial authorities and parts of the city administration. Well-known companies such as Vitronic Industrielle Bildverarbeitungssysteme contribute to the vibrant economic structure. Many state ministries, including the Ministry of Economics in the neo-baroque Landeshaus, are also based in Südost. The former US hospital on the second ring road has served as police headquarters since 2004.
A highlight in the southeast
The Schlachthof Wiesbaden will celebrate its 30th anniversary as a cultural center in 2024 and is a well-known event venue throughout Germany.
From the statistics
More apartments are being built in the south-east than in the rest of the city: the rate of new construction is 8.9 percent, compared with 3.4 percent in the city as a whole.
