Naurod: Quality of life on the Taunus
Naurod is picturesquely situated on the edge of the Taunus, surrounded by extensive wooded areas that are ideal for hikes and excursions.
Charming location and nature
A particular highlight is the Kellerskopf, Wiesbaden's highest point at 474 meters. Its observation tower, built in 1900, offers breathtaking views: from the Taunus across the Rhine-Main region to the Odenwald. To the north of the village is the Niedernhausen Theißtal nature reserve. This valuable conservation area preserves habitats for rare plant and animal species and highlights Naurod's natural surroundings.
History and development
Naurod had to struggle with difficult growing conditions for a long time. The poor soil forced many farmers to earn their living as a sideline. With the opening of the "Ländchesbahn" in 1879, jobs became more easily accessible. Even before the Second World War, many workers commuted to Wiesbaden and Frankfurt, especially to the Höchst paint works.
Naurod changed noticeably in the 1960s. It developed into a popular residential community in which the village character and local recreational quality were to be consciously preserved. This was reflected in its incorporation into Wiesbaden in 1977, when an upper limit of 5,000 inhabitants was set.
Social life and clubs
Naurod is proud of its active club life. Almost 30 clubs have been founded since the 1970s, including history, winter sports and partnership clubs. They form the social backbone of the district. Particularly noteworthy is the "Gemaa-Backes" community bakery, which is not only used for the annual baking festival but also for private celebrations and was lovingly renovated by the city of Wiesbaden in 2023 with great attention to detail.
Events and traditions
For over 65 years, the "Äppelblütefest" has been held in Naurod in May, a highlight of the year that attracts tens of thousands of visitors. Cider and May punch are served along the main street and in neighboring courtyards. Other events such as the Nauroder Sommerlaune and the Nikolausmarkt strengthen the sense of community.
Change
The establishment of the International School Wiesbaden has further enhanced Naurod as a residential and educational location. New residential areas and the village square behind the church demonstrate the careful development of the district.
A highlight in Naurod
Get married with a view: At Wiesbaden's highest registry office, the Berggasthof Kellerskopf, saying "I do" becomes unforgettable. Since 2017, couples have been able to get married in a small group on the historic, 20-metre-high observation tower.
From the statistics
Once "Nauerder2, always "Nauerder": over 42 percent of residents have lived in Naurod for 20 years or more.
