The drastic changes in the life situation of single parents often bring with them numerous questions about their financial situation. Unemployment benefit I (SGB III)

If you have worked subject to compulsory insurance for at least twelve months within the last two years before becoming unemployed, you are entitled to unemployment benefit I (ALG I = insurance benefit according to Social Code III). For people with at least one child, this amounts to around 67% of your flat-rate net income and is paid for a limited period (twelve to 24 months, depending on your age). Important: As a rule, you must be available for the labor market, i.e. childcare must be available. You can submit your application for unemployment benefit directly online via the Employment Agency portal or contact us for advice on all further details and how to apply.

Citizen's income (SGB II)

If you receive citizen's allowance, you will be advised/supported by your case manager at the municipal social benefits and job center. This includes advice and support on all aspects of applying for and receiving benefits as well as on taking up employment or developing an integration strategy, such as job placement, application training, qualification and further training opportunities as well as financial assistance for taking up employment and setting up a business.

Social assistance (SGB XII)

If your income and assets are insufficient and you are already receiving a standard old-age pension or are permanently fully "incapacitated for work" (over the age of 18), you are entitled to benefits to secure your livelihood (social assistance/SGBXII). This benefit must be applied for and, if necessary, extended after twelve months. Note: If there is a claim to third parties, this must be realized in advance (subordination principle). Advice, applications and information can be obtained from the social benefits and job center.

This is paid for all children up to the age of 18, as well as for children in training and studying up to the age of 25 and, under certain conditions, for unemployed children up to the age of 21. For children over the age of 18, the payment of child benefit depends on the child's income. If the parents are separated, the parent caring for the child receives the child benefit. Employees in the public sector receive child benefit with their salary, all other parents must apply for it.
