Veterans of the Airlift
On June 25, 2008, veterans of the Airlift signed the Golden Book of the City of Wiesbaden.
Sixty years after the start of the Berlin Blockade and exactly 45 years to the day after U.S. President Kennedy's visit to Wiesbaden, Lord Mayor Müller welcomed veterans of the airlift, who had supplied the population of Berlin with food and other everyday goods for over a year, to the ballroom of the town hall.
On June 25, 2008, twelve pilots, technicians and logisticians who had taken part in this largest supply mission in history as soldiers of the American Air Force from Erbenheim signed the city's Golden Book.
Müller expressed his thanks on behalf of all Germans for this achievement, without which reunification would never have been possible. He particularly praised the unique leadership style of General William H. Tunner, who had organized the airlift and had also immortalized himself in the Golden Book in June 1957 when he retired from the office of Supreme Commander of the American Air Force in Europe.
