President of Togo, Olympio
On May 24, 1961, the President of Togo, Olympio, signed the Golden Book of the City of Wiesbaden.
On the occasion of his state visit to Hesse, the President of Togo, Silvanus Épiphanio Olympio, accepted an invitation from the city council to a reception in the town hall on the morning of May 24, 1961.
Under the watchful eyes of the federal police security team, the distinguished guest of state signed the city's Golden Book together with his wife.
Mayor Buch paid tribute to the politician, who was assassinated two years later in a military coup, as the founder of freedom for his people. The task of the Federal Republic was to support the young state, in which the first free elections had only taken place in 1958.
To commemorate his visit to the state capital, the President was then presented with the bowl of honor.
Olympio then thanked the representatives of the city and explained that, in addition to his office as President, he also served as Mayor of Lomé and therefore hoped to learn from the experiences of his Wiesbaden counterpart with regard to reconstruction. He returned the favor with a hand-woven blanket from his home country and a silver plaque.
After a reception with Rheingau specialties, Olympio continued his visit to the new commercial vocational school in Welfenstraße to the spontaneous applause of the Wiesbaden population.
