Memorial to the murdered Jews of Schierstein

On September 20, 1968, the memorial in Schierstein, which is dedicated to the deported and murdered Jews of Schierstein, was opened to the public.

The Schierstein synagogue, which was consecrated in 1858, was desecrated on November 10, 1938, but was not burned or destroyed and remained standing as a ruin for decades. The city used it for many years as a storage room for the city cleaning service.

It was demolished in the 1960s, but the foundation walls and the rose window above the synagogue shrine were preserved and used as part of the memorial inaugurated on September 20, 1968. In 2020, the local council, together with the Schierstein local history museum, added an information board to the memorial with further information about the site. The Erich Kästner School added information about Jewish life in Schierstein to the plaque.
