FOR DEMOCRACY - Wiesbaden citizens in the resistance against the Nazi regime
The memorial installation "FOR DEMOCRACY - Wiesbaden citizens resisting the Nazi regime" was handed over to the citizens on July 20, 2021 during a ceremony in the town hall.
Memorial installation for Wiesbaden resistance fighters
The anti-democratic efforts of the NSDAP were also resisted in Wiesbaden during the Weimar Republic. From 1933 onwards, citizens from all non-Nazi parties, various professions, the most diverse social classes and almost all age groups and beliefs were involved in opposing the Nazi regime. The memorial installation in the foyer of Wiesbaden Town Hall is dedicated to them. It was presented to the citizens during a ceremony on July 20, 2021.
Design of the memorial installation
The renowned Frankfurt installation artist Vollrad Kutscher was recruited to design it. Together with Horst Ziegenfusz, he also designed the online presentation, which includes portraits of resistance fighters based on historical photographs. Resistance researchers Dr. Axel Ulrich and Dr. Rolf Faber were responsible for the content design. They researched the biographies of 14 Wiesbaden residents who resisted the Nazi regime. Their research findings are presented in the foyer of Wiesbaden Town Hall and online.
FOR DEMOCRACY - Wiesbaden citizens in the resistance against the Nazi regime
The memorial installation looks back on an unusually long history. As early as 1986, the town council voted in favor of erecting a memorial to the victims of National Socialist rule. The memorial was intended in particular to honor those who had resisted. It was not until 2013, on the initiative of the then head of the city council Wolfgang Nickel, that the decision was finally made to create a special memorial site for the resistance fighters, among others.
The working group tasked with the conception of the project continued to develop it until a suitable location was found in the foyer of Wiesbaden City Hall. In 2020, the city council approved one of the designs presented by Kutscher and Ziegenfusz following a vote by the working group and the Committee of Elders, so that work could begin in the foyer. The memorial was inaugurated on July 20, 2021, the day commemorating the German resistance fighters against the Nazi regime. Vollrad Kutscher, Dr. Axel Ulrich and Dr. Rolf Faber introduced the concept on which the presentation was based. City councillor Dr. Gerhard Obermayr, former city councillor Wolfgang Nickel and Lord Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende gave welcoming speeches. Dr. Peter Quadflieg, Director of the Wiesbaden City Archive, gave a technical introduction to the topic. The ceremony was broadcast as a livestream. The memorial will be supplemented by a digital presentation under the link below.
