1873: Demolition of the clock tower

The clock tower in Marktstraße, with its narrow passageway, was an obstacle to the increasing traffic - so it was decided that it would have to go.

It was taken down on April 15, 1873. The upper town gate, the last remnant of the original fortifications, thus disappeared from the townscape.

The town wall and the other gates had essentially already been demolished between 1811 and 1817.
