Nature is subject to constant change, the alternation of destruction, renewal and transformation. From the small butterfly that undergoes a transformation from caterpillar to butterfly in its lifetime to the enormous geological processes that shape the earth - everything is subject to incessant change. The exhibition invites visitors to discover the different aspects of these changes and to understand their driving forces and dynamics.

The diversity of minerals, the cycle of rocks, the change in forms of energy and evolution using the example of apples and birds' eggs form the prelude to a presentation that is unique in Germany. The show is introduced by an interactive globe that offers the opportunity to travel through time, follow the drift of the continents and call up data on climate change.

In addition to original collection pieces from the end of the 17th century and three-dimensional replicas of her copperplate engravings - so-called dioramas - the collection of natural scientist and artist Maria Sibylla Merian, whose South America collection is stored in the Museum Wiesbaden, is presented. "When looking at the dioramas, which are based on Merian's copperplate engravings, we can put ourselves in Merian's shoes. Like her, we can go on a discovery tour of European meadows," says curator Dr. Hannes Lerp, delighted with the work of the preparation.

In addition, the Museum Wiesbaden and the Alfred Weigle Foundation will be awarding the Maria Sibylla Merian Prize for aspiring female artists and natural scientists from 2025. The prize is intended to enable a publication that presents their work to a broad public - in the spirit of Merian's work.

Another focus is the museum's mineral collection, which is now on permanent display to the public. And finally, the focus will be on people themselves. For the discoveries of electricity and radio activities and their subsequent use not only radically changed our lives, but also our view of the world.

The Natural History Collections

The Museum Wiesbaden is home to one of the largest natural history collections in Germany. The "Change" themed room completes the existing permanent exhibition with the themed rooms of form, color, movement and time. The permanent presentation Aesthetics of Nature conveys the treasures of nature in a sensory experience. From a life-size polar bear to hundreds of colorful butterflies - with more than 6,000 natural objects from all continents and past geological eras, visitors are invited to follow in the footsteps of the history of the earth and evolution into the rich and colorful diversity of nature.

The Hessian Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Viticulture, Forestry, Hunting and Homeland supported the implementation of the "Change" theme area with substantial financial support. Nassauische Sparkasse is a partner of the permanent exhibition Aesthetics of Nature.
