Around 1,500 Jewish Wiesbaden residents were persecuted and murdered during the National Socialist era. Who were these people, how did they live and what happened to them? What was Jewish life like in Wiesbaden before and after the Shoah? What freedoms were restricted? What freedoms were fought for? What happiness was achieved? The "Aktive Museum Spiegelgasse für Deutsch-Jüdische Geschichte in Wiesbaden e.V." (AMS) deals with these questions.

What does the name "Aktives Museum Spiegelgasse" stand for? Spiegelgasse is a street in the center of Wiesbaden with a long Jewish tradition. The term "museum" stands for everything that makes up a modern museum: collecting, researching, documenting, analyzing, informing and publishing, all with one goal: to interest people in the German-Jewish history of Wiesbaden.

Finally, the key term "active" also stands for the continued willingness to intervene in social debates, for the careful reconstruction of almost forgotten Jewish life stories and for the active communication of the insight that Jews should never be reduced to the role of victims imposed on them by the Nazi regime. There was a great wealth of Jewish life before the Shoah, and it still exists today.

The main activities of the AMS include changing exhibitions in Spiegelgasse 11 (near Kochbrunnen), the long-standing projects "Erinnerungsblätter" (Pages of Remembrance) and "Stolpersteine" (Stumbling Stones) as well as the establishment and maintenance of an extensive, publicly accessible specialist library with currently around 5,500 volumes. There are also events such as guided tours, readings, theater performances, discussion events and more.

As a non-profit association, the AMS offers various opportunities to get involved. On the one hand, anyone who is interested is welcome to volunteer. On the other hand, the AMS always needs financial support, for example in the form of donations or sponsoring memberships.
