Fluxus

Wiesbaden was the venue for the premiere of "Fluxus: International Festival of Contemporary Music" in 1962 and can therefore be considered the birthplace of Fluxus.

A spectacular event at the Landesmuseum Wiesbaden in 1962 gave birth to an art movement that caused a worldwide sensation: Fluxus. It was founded by George Maciunas. It was not the work of art that mattered to him, but the creative idea.

At that time, during the "Fluxus International Festival of Contemporary Music", a concert grand piano was smashed in the museum's lecture hall during Philip Corner's performance "piano activities" to the amused but also outraged reactions of the audience. This action was initially perceived as an affront to bourgeois traditions and a scandal. Due to the media coverage of the Wiesbaden events, they were seen as a source of worldwide upheaval in the visual arts from a cultural-historical perspective.
