Evangelische Kirche Nordenstadt

The town of Nordenstadt was first mentioned in documents in 950 A.D. and presumably already had a small church then. Around 1100 A.D., the lower part of the Romanesque tower of today's church was built, which was later converted to the Late Gothic style with the addition of the choir. During the Thirty Years War, the town and the church were severely damaged. From 1718 to 1721, the dilapidated church was torn down and rebuilt as a bigger church; the choir and the tower remained unchanged. The church acquired its most striking aspects during the Baroque period. A Baroque tower dome was added and the date 1738 was affixed to the tower. The interior is designed in the style of rural Baroque with its marbled wooden pillars and the gallery. The pulpit and the epitaph complete the Baroque features of this church. The present appearance of the interior was achieved by the installation of a Classic Revival style barrel vault with a coffered ceiling (1823) and the Romantic-era organ (1886).
