Favorite places in Wiesbaden: Thomas Martin - The Kochbrunnenplatz

Dear guests of the city of Wiesbaden,

My list of favorite places in Wiesbaden is long, but right at the top is "Kochbrunnenplatz". After all, this place is the historical heart of the spa town and the world spa town and thus the origin of Wiesbaden's urban development.

Even the way to my favorite place via Wilhelmstraße, affectionately called the "Rue" by the people of Wiesbaden, fills me with anticipation. This magnificent promenade is characterized by the beautiful view of the "Warme Damm", the imposing State Theatre and the unique view over the Bowling Green with its beautiful cascading fountains to the magnificent Kurhaus and the historic colonnades.

The route passes exclusive stores, the historic Kaiser Friedrich Platz and the noble Nassauer Hof hotel. Once you reach Kureck, it is only a short walk along Taunusstraße, which is no longer just the center of exclusive antique dealers, but has also developed into a place of diverse culinary destinations. Arriving at Kochbrunnenplatz, I feel transported back to the 19th century and immerse myself in the flair of the former cosmopolitan spa town of Wiesbaden.

The backdrops of the former Grand Hotels Rose and Palast Hotel in particular, as well as the view of the Schwarzer Bock on Kranzplatz, transport me back to a golden age in which Wiesbaden was also known as the "Nice of the North". Each of these houses has its own unique history and I would like to invite you to find out more on one of the many guided tours of the city. Perhaps you would like to know how Enrico Caruso sang from a balcony of the Palasthotel in 1908 to an enthusiastic spa audience or how the former Grandhotel Rose developed into the seat of the Hessian State Chancellery.

Most impressive of all is the historic fountain temple, the memorial to the glamorous "Kochbrunnen" spa establishment. Of the 26 hot springs in Wiesbaden, the Kochbrunnen is the hottest with a temperature of almost 67 degrees. Spa and recreation seekers from all over the world flocked to the spa town of Wiesbaden.

The former spa complex, built by Wilhelm Bogler in 1888 in the style of the Italian High Renaissance, originally consisted of a portal building, drinking and promenade halls and the spring pavilion. The beautiful square is still dominated by the stately fountain temple and - along Saalgasse - the former Wandelhalle. I like to sit in the restaurant in front of the Wandelhalle and enjoy a delicious drink while watching the hustle and bustle on the square - where there is so much more to see and experience.

Wiesbaden is looking forward to your visit!
