The media center manages a large number of mobile devices at Wiesbaden schools with modern administration software.
The Wiesbaden Media Center uses Jamf School as a mobile device management solution to manage tablets at schools sponsored by the state capital of Wiesbaden on its behalf. This application enables very large numbers of devices to be managed remotely and is essential in a modern school IT infrastructure.
Functions of a mobile device management system
The media center support team will provide the iPad with a profile. The profile specifies certain settings. The support team can also install apps. All of this happens automatically via WLAN, without the need for support staff to have the device in their hands. Even if the device is reinstalled, it is automatically included in the management system again.
What the media center can/can't do (examples):
The media center can do that:
Determine the approximate location of the device using the IP address. However, it is not possible to locate the device exactly as you know it from navigation apps, as the media center cannot access the GPS location.
View the list of all installed apps, but not their content.
Install apps on the device and delete them again.
Define settings for security reasons or educational considerations and according to school specifications.
Enter the access data for the school WLAN without the child being able to see the password.
Lock the device in the event of loss or theft.
The media center cannot do that (examples):
View content or data from apps.
View files on the device, neither the name, number nor their content.
View the browsing history.
Remotely control the device or view the screen.
Activate the camera or microphone.
View the exact location (GPS tracking).
View a private Apple ID, if one is used. Apps installed with a private Apple ID cannot be deleted by the Media Center.
Notes on various device groups
Student devices owned by the school authority / school work without an Apple ID and therefore also without Apple iCloud, which facilitates data protection-compliant use.
Teachers' official loaned devices: They have the choice of whether they want to use iPads in the same way as the pupils or whether they also want to use a personal Apple ID. If they use an Apple ID, they can install or purchase apps independently in addition to the centrally installed apps.
Student devices privately owned by parents (1:1 project) that are integrated into the MDM are configured according to the school's specifications. This may be done on a year-specific basis. Among other things, schools can specify whether and from when the use of personal Apple IDs is permitted.

Support offer for schools
The Media Center offers the complete administration of the MDM school environment to schools sponsored by the city of Wiesbaden. This includes
Locking and, if necessary, locating in the event of loss, theft, etc.
This support service is intended to relieve school IT officers of this task as far as possible. Nevertheless, it is still possible for teachers to participate in the central administration of the iPads if they expressly wish to do so.
Note for the 1:1 project of the LHW:
In the following document you will find an overview of all device settings that are firmly specified by the school authorities and the media center as well as a list of settings that are made available to the schools for selection. The school management is responsible for communicating setting requests. We recommend discussing and agreeing these with the representatives of the teachers, pupils and parents in advance.
