The Kurhaus

Kurhaus organ

The Friedrich von Thiersch Hall has been equipped with an organ since it was rebuilt in 1907. It stands - mostly concealed - behind the gilded grille of the stage.

The former instrument, the Opus 1000 from the well-known organ builder Wilhelm Sauer, Frankfurt (Oder), was played by such renowned organists as Fritz Volbach, Charles-Marie Widor, Enrico Bossi, Karl Straube, Alfred Sittard, Louis Vierne, Marcel Dupré, Friedrich Petersen and Kurt Utz. This instrument was destroyed during the Second World War.

In 1954, the hall received the three-manual Steinmeyer organ Opus 1855 with 44 stops, designed by Professor Kurt Utz. In the course of the original restoration of the Friedrich von Thiersch Hall in 1987, the Steinmeyer organ was also renewed and extended. It then had 48 stops and a Schwellwerk with Schwebung. The console was fitted with a setting system; it is movable on the stage. The gilded grille can be opened. In 2011, the Cornet stop with extensions was installed in the Hauptwerk and the pedal, so that the organ now has 51 stops. The specification can be viewed and accessed on the website of the Kurhaus Organ Sponsors' Association at www.kurhausorgel.de (opens in a new tab) in the "The Hall Organ" section.

Another milestone in 2017 was the purchase of the new red console, as the old one had not been working reliably for years and was suffering from technical failures. The joint project of the Förderverein Kurhausorgel e.V. and its cooperation partner Kurhaus Wiesbaden was successfully implemented with around 90,000 euros - as decided by the city council on November 17, 2016.

The instrument is used at concerts and festive events both as a solo and accompanying instrument. Renowned organists such as Yves Devernay (Paris), Ullrich and Martina Böhme (Leipzig), André Pagenel (Bourges), Martin Lücker (Frankfurt am Main), Arvid Gast (Lübeck), Edgar Krapp (Munich), Iveta Apkalna (Riga/Berlin), Gabriel Dessauer (Wiesbaden), Hans Uwe Hielscher (Wiesbaden), Fritz Walther (HR Frankfurt am Main), Leo van Doeselaar (Amsterdam/Berlin) and Felix Hell (Baltimore) have performed on it.
The spring and autumn concerts, the organ matinée at Easter, the organ day at Whitsun and the organ night in August, which are organized by the Kurhaus Organ Sponsors' Association with various guest organists, are an integral part of concert life in Wiesbaden. The matinée on Christmas Eve is an event organized by Wiesbaden Congress & Marketing GmbH. The annual program can be viewed at www.kurhausorgel.de in the "Concerts" section.

Friedhelm Gerecke has been the curator of the Kurhaus organ since 1986. He looks after the instrument, checks and tunes it before every concert. He has been supported by the Kurhaus Organ Association since 2004. Friedhelm Gerecke can be contacted by e-mail at gereckekurhausorgelde and by telephone on 0611 / 1899225.
