religious denomination: protestant

For 40 years now the Protestant St. Thomas' Church and its bell tower, which can be seen from afar, have dominated the landscape in the northeast of the city. This church, which was designed by the architect Rainer Schell and consecrated in 1964, is a child of its time with its visible concrete construction, an expression of modern ecclesiastical architecture in a deliberate contrast to the historicism which looks back and otherwise determines the ecclesiastical architecture in Wiesbaden. Despite the contemporary nature of the materials and the form of expression, this edifice succeeds in showing the true Protestant focus on the essentials. Eyes are automatically drawn to the dominating centre of the room, the crucifix. This bronze sculpture by Jürgen Weber, which has lost nothing of its disturbing forcefulness in 40 years, emphasizes the agonizing sufferings of creation that Jesus took upon himself. Thus the parish, which was initially founded as part of the Hill Church Parish in 1954/55 and belonged to this parish until 1961, has its own natural focus.
