The Catholic Parish of St. Birgid was founded in 1907. For 30 years, the few members of the parish met for mass in temporary lodgings or in a temporary church on the site of today's church. But the parish grew, and with it the desire for a real church. Despite the difficult circumstances at that time, construction began in 1938 and on 19 April 1939, with a solemn benediction, the church was handed over to the parish. The church was built in the style of an Ottonian hall church using quarrystones from Sonnenberg according to the plans of diocesan master builder Fritz Johannbroer. The first renovation in 1948 removed the worst of the damage caused by the war. The church was consecrated on 2 May 1948. In 1953 it became necessary to expand the church; this work began in 1963 according to the plans of Paul Johannbroer. In 1987, the chancel was redesigned in accordance with the liturgical requirements of the Second Vatican Council. In 1998 the construction of the hall and the lift was begun, so that the church and the parish rooms can now be reached without any difficulty.
