The church of the Sacred Heart, consecrated in 1890, stands out with its pointed steeple in Schuppstrasse, Sonnenberg. Over the entrance a picture on sheet copper of Jesus as the good shepherd greets us. Inside, the church shines in new splendour after the renovation in 2006, made possible by the generous donations of parish members and local firms. Neo-Gothic paintings in a blaze of colour decorate the altar and the nave in particular. Colourful stained-glass windows with motifs from the Old and New Testaments round off the harmony around the altar. The high altar was removed; the tabernacle and the lectern are wrought-iron work from Maria Laach and were put up in 1982. The crucifix next to the altar is 18th century and plays an important role in festival services. The altar on the left is decorated with a restored Sacred Heart statue created in the 19th/20th century. Here there are candles which are lit in gratitude or prayer by the faithful. In the right-hand aisle you can see an altar with a depiction of the Mother of God. In the entrance area of the church golden icons and a wonderful pietà catch one's attention. There is plenty of room in the gallery for a large organ and a choir of twenty. The Sacred Heart church radiates its own atmosphere in which God's presence can be felt and which has become very dear to the members of the parish.
