Positive overnight stay figures for Germany and Hesse -
New record with 1,337,702 overnight stays in Wiesbaden in 2023
In 2023, tourism in Germany recorded the second-best result in its history. According to the Federal Statistical Office, accommodation providers in Germany recorded 487.2 million overnight stays by domestic and foreign guests. This is 8.1 percent more than in 2022 and only 1.7 percent less than in the record year of 2019.
Hesse is even above the national average: the Hessian State Statistical Office reports an increase of 13% compared to 2022, with almost 33.7 million overnight stays in Hesse. The average number of overnight stays in Hesse remained below the level of 2019, the year before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, at minus 5%.
The figures for Wiesbaden are particularly pleasing: with 1,337,702 overnight stays, the record year 2019 was even exceeded by 4.6%. Wiesbaden is also ahead in a Germany-wide and Hesse-wide comparison with 2022. Here, an increase in overnight stays of 20.5% was recorded.
Martin Michel, Managing Director of Wiesbaden Congress & Marketing GmbH: "The events in our hotels are a key driver of the overnight stay statistics. A large number of congresses, trade fairs and conferences, some lasting several days, with many thousands of participants lead to the extremely positive result in 2023."
German guests in particular have given Germany a boost as a travel destination: Around 83 percent of overnight stays across Germany were attributable to locals alone. Hesse and Wiesbaden each recorded a 78% share of domestic visitors.
Figures on the origin of guests and detailed monthly overviews from Wiesbaden are expected shortly from the Office for Statistics and Urban Research. Please note that the figures shown are provisional.
