Hohenstein Castle, one of the largest castle ruins in the Taunus, stands high above the valley on steep cliffs. It has been an insider tip ever since a hotel and restaurant were opened here in 1968. However, the castle has become increasingly popular since the nostalgic Nassau tourist train from Wiesbaden made it easy to reach the popular excursion destination. In particular, the open-air performances in the castle courtyard continue to attract numerous visitors.

The imposing ruins were built around 1190. Over the following centuries, the castle continued to fall into disrepair and in 1604, Moritz the Learned had the castle repaired and further fortified. During the Thirty Years' War, it was badly destroyed and all attempts to rebuild the lofty building failed.
