23 places - 23 stories - Kastel
Kastel, the bridgehead community on the Rhine, connects the state capitals of Wiesbaden and Mainz, i.e. the federal states of Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate.
For many, this district is Wiesbaden's most beautiful outpost in the direction of Mainz. The name gives it away: Over the centuries, the affiliation of Kastel has gone back and forth between the municipalities. It was finally agreed that the word "Mainz" would remain in the name, but administratively Kastel is part of Wiesbaden and therefore also of Hesse. Although it is only a bridge to the center of the Rhineland-Palatinate capital, the view across the water is directly onto the silhouette of Mainz with its imposing cathedral.
Wiesbadeners also appreciate Mainz-Kastel: The natural beach on the banks of the Rhine directly below the beautiful promenade is ideal for that vacation feeling on your doorstep. And all this in a historic setting: The history of Kastel goes back a millennium, when the Romans built a bridge over the Rhine to reach their fort - hence the name.
The strategically important location on the river also led to the construction of the Reduit, a massive fortification directly above the beach, 800 years later. The Reduit has long since developed into a bastion of leisure and culture and is now home to the Kasteler Heimatmuseum - as well as the Bastion von Schönborn, a restaurant with a beer garden, cozy pub and, of course, a beach bar in summer, which provides sun worshippers on the Rhine beach with cool drinks.
