23 places - 23 stories - Frauenstein
The idyllically situated village of Frauenstein already offers a view of the Rheingau. It is not only famous for its cherry blossom. The western suburb is an important source of regional fruit.
Wiesbaden and the Rheingau are not only perfect neighbors, sometimes they seem almost symbiotic. Like here in the southwest of the city, where the Wiesbaden district of Frauenstein feels like a winegrowing village. Frauenstein is Wiesbaden's gateway to the Rheingau: everything here is dedicated to wine, and a European vineyard has even been planted in the direction of Schierstein, where different grape varieties from all over Europe grow.
The wine in Frauenstein only faces competition from cherries once a year. When the numerous cherry trees in the district are in white-pink blossom, it is not only the people of Wiesbaden who are drawn to the district.
But even at such peak times, people in Frauenstein remain calm. With a population of around 2,500, the district is cozy and village-like, the proverbial "thousand-year-old lime tree" stands next to the church of St. Georg, and beautiful half-timbered houses characterize the townscape. At the same time, the numerous hiking trails through the vineyards create a feeling of space - and it is never far to the nearest inn.
The district takes its name from Frauenstein Castle, which towers high above the houses. A local association had the ruins restored in the 1990s so that they can be visited today. A good 200 years ago, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe also visited Frauenstein and carried out geological studies high above the Rhine because he was fascinated by the quartzite found here. In 1932, an imposing monument was erected to the polymath on the Spitzen Stein: a kind of obelisk made of natural stone. But the view down to the Rhine - and to Frauenstein with its vineyards and inns - is at least as beautiful from up here.
Church blossoms
The cultural landscape has been largely preserved here: Orchard meadows characterize the view, which extends as far as the Rheingau. The cherry blossom season is particularly beautiful - and Frauenstein's cherries are famous far and wide. Local shopping is available in farm stores and at street stalls.
