women's museum wiesbaden

The "frauenmuseum wiesbaden" regularly shows temporary exhibitions on the history and culture of women in society.

Backyard view

First things first: this house is also interesting for men. What museum director Beatrixe Klein and her team have created here in a backyard in the Westend is a very special cultural-historical collection that extends over four floors. Downstairs, the museum regularly presents well-designed special exhibitions on the biographies of women who are not the focus of historiography, but who have made a big impact from the second row.

The further up you go, the deeper you delve into the past - one exhibition documents the women's movement in Wiesbaden, "there was an amazingly active scene" here in the 1960s and 1970s, says director Klein. The oldest treasures are right at the top. The permanent exhibition "Of Goddesses and Wisdom" shows figurines of women and goddesses, some of which date back to the Stone Age. The collection includes 400 replicas and originals, providing insights into ancient perceptions of femininity.

An exciting detail: look out for the bird-like masks that many of the figures from very different cultures wear. This is a sign, says Klein, that birds, their freedom and proximity to the sky, were once associated with female deities. An exciting contrast to the sculptures is provided by the museum's small but fine art collection, which can also be seen on the top floor: the large-format paintings by contemporary female artists provide new references in combination with the sculptures.
