Via Mattiacorum
The "Via Mattiacorum" leads from Idstein to Wiesbaden. Three has now been re-certified as a quality hiking trail for three years by the Wanderbares Deutschland 2023 quality initiative. It starts at the war memorial in the Nero Valley.
If you choose the "Via Mattiacorum" hiking trail for a hike, you will be following in Roman footsteps from the Limes World Heritage Site to the Mattiac springs in the Hessian state capital. You can set off from Idstein or Wiesbaden on the 28-kilometre trail along the "Via Mattiacorum".
From Wiesbaden to Idstein
From Wiesbaden, the hiking trail starts at the "Kriegerdenkmal" (war memorial) in the Nero Valley, which can be easily reached by local public transport (ÖPNV) on bus line 1 from Wiesbaden main station. The start in Wiesbaden is the more athletic option with an ascent of around 380 meters to the hunting lodge. The route leads through the Nerotal Park out of the city through forests and meadows to the Limes World Heritage Site. The finish in Idstein offers restaurants, accommodation and excellent public transport connections.
From Idstein to Wiesbaden
Starting at Idstein railroad station, the trail has an easy character. Through the varied low mountain range landscape, you soon reach the Limes and from the Platte hunting lodge, the trail leads steadily downhill over Wiesbaden's local mountain, the Neroberg, to the Nero Valley Park.
Both directions allow the hike to be divided or interrupted halfway through in Taunusstein-Wehen with its restaurants and good public transport connections.
