SDG 13 in Wiesbaden

SDG "Climate action"

In Hessian: "Des lebberd sich zesamme"

What is it about and what does the SDG "Climate action" mean for the events industry?

Sustainable Development Goal 13 calls for immediate action to combat climate change and its impacts. SDG 13 includes climate protection and targets for adapting to the consequences of climate change. For the event industry, this means that events should be designed to be climate-friendly and geared towards reducing CO2 emissions.(Source tw-media.com (opens in a new tab))

How do we implement this?

Many measures that have already been mentioned in other SDGs are bundled together again in SDG 13, which calls for a general and overarching fight against climate change and all measures related to sustainability contribute to this.

✓ Determining the CO2 footprint:

  • Events of all kinds cause CO2 emissions and leave a carbon footprint - an ecological footprint. A first step in the right direction is to understand how much CO2 your own event emits. In this way, targeted countermeasures can be developed to reduce them.
We provide a CO2 calculator specially designed for events by the Federal Environment Agency (opens in a new tab) for quick and easy CO2 calculation. This allows you to determine the emissions of your events clearly and free of charge. The calculator is regularly updated by the Federal Environment Agency and KlimAktiv GmbH to reflect the latest scientific findings.

✓ Reduce CO2 through mobility:

Mobility is one of the main factors for high CO2 emissions at events. We support event planners in ensuring that guests and employees travel to and from Wiesbaden in an environmentally friendly way and use public transport or bicycles.

  • As the state capital of Hesse, Wiesbaden is centrally located in Germany and can therefore be easily reached by public transport from any direction in just a few hours. This makes Wiesbaden a suitable venue for events to which participants from all over Germany are invited.
  • The event infrastructure in Wiesbaden contributes to SDG 13 per se. Wiesbaden is a manageable city. The major event venues such as the RMCC and the Kurhaus Wiesbaden as well as the largest hotel capacities are all within walking distance of each other and are also within walking distance of Wiesbaden Central Station.
  • Provision of discounted tickets for local public transport (e.g. DB event ticket (opens in a new tab)).
  • Free job ticket for employees.

✓ Reduction of CO2 emissions through:

  • Use of electricity from renewable energy sources in the RMCC, Kurhaus Wiesbaden, Jagdschloss Platte and the offices of WICM GmbH
  • Use of energy-saving LED technology in the event venues
  • 1200m² photovoltaic system with 200 kilowatt peak (kWp) to generate basic electricity on the roof of the RMCC. This saves approx. 130-140 tons of CO2 emissions per year. Energy surpluses that are not consumed by the RMCC are fed into the general power grid.
  • Low heat consumption thanks to thermal insulation and multi-glazed windows
  • Lower electricity consumption for lighting through the use of daylight. Daylight available in almost all conference rooms in the RMCC, 90% of the rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows for plenty of daylight
  • Peak loads in the RMCC are supplied by district heating from a biomass cogeneration plant
  • The RMCC has a waste water heat pump. The heat generated in this way is fed into the heating circuit and used to heat the underfloor heating, for example.
  • Energy-optimized air conditioning and heating technology
  • Continuous monitoring of consumption and technically optimized control of heating and cooling
  • Consistent switch-off of unnecessary appliances/lighting

✓ Reduction of waste:

  • At major public events organized by WICM GmbH, market vendors, wine stands, catering stands, etc. are required to refrain from using disposable tableware and to use reusable options. This is integrated into the event announcements and the market regulations and is randomly checked during the events.
  • Collection of recyclable materials at the company (batteries, fluorescent tubes, glasses, natural corks, crown caps, cell phones + accessories, pens, CDs/DVDs)

✓ Prioritize water efficiency:

  • The RMCC has a service water system with an external cistern and a capacity of 145 m³ of water. Rainwater is collected in the cistern, which is intercepted on the roof of the south area and fed into the cistern via a filter. The rainwater is used for toilet flushing, for watering the lawns in front of the building and for the water level in the three water basins in front of the building.
  • The RMCC and Kurhaus Wiesbaden are equipped with toilets with a water-saving function and automatic taps at the washbasins.
  • Environmentally friendly sanitary technologies by installing dry towel dispensers in all sanitary areas of the RMCC and Kurhaus Wiesbaden as well as the offices to avoid paper towel waste.

✓ Integration of regional products:

  • In our Tourist Information (opens in a new tab), we sell almost exclusively products from local and regional production. We organize monthly events at the Wiesbaden Tourist Information where local companies are invited to present and sell their products. ("Wiesbaden Trifft sich (opens in a new tab)")
  • Our catering partner at the RMCC "GAUL CATERING (opens in a new tab)" pursues a sustainable catering concept with the "Greenline", which integrates seasonal products, regional partners and vegetarian dishes that are freshly prepared in front of the guests at front cooking stations. Gaul has developed sustainability guidelines for its own company, suppliers and partners. These include guidelines on the procurement of food, the selection of suppliers, the reduction of waste and disposable products, water consumption, waste separation and many other sustainable points.
