SDG 7 in Wiesbaden

SDG "Affordable and clean energy"

In Hessian: "De sauwersde schdroom eas der, den de schboarsd"

What is it about and what does the SDG "Affordable and clean energy" mean for the event industry?

For the event industry, this means that energy consumption must be optimized and energy-efficient technologies must be used. The event industry is encouraged to focus on renewable energies such as solar energy and wind power in order to increase the proportion of sustainable energy sources.

What immediate measures can event professionals start with to contribute to SDG 7?

  • Carry out an energy audit: Energy audits show the current energy consumption and identify the main polluters in event venues. Accordingly, potential savings can be made if the main drivers are known.
  • Switch to renewable energies
  • Installation and use of solar energy
  • Use of energy-efficient lighting and technology, such as LED lighting
  • Choosing sustainable venues for your own event: Event planners should ask potential event venues about energy balances, CO2 audits, environmentally friendly infrastructure and the use of renewable energy and take this into account when planning an event.

How do we implement this?

✓ Use of electricity from renewable energies:

  • WICM GmbH uses electricity from renewable energy sources in the RMCC, Kurhaus Wiesbaden, Jagdschloss Platte and in the company's additional office premises.

✓ Use of energy-saving LED technology in the event venues

✓ Energy from PV:

  • There is a 1,200 m² photovoltaic system with 200 kilowatt peak (kWp) to generate basic electricity on the roof of the RMCC. This saves around 130-140 tons of CO2 emissions per year. Energy surpluses that are not consumed by the RMCC are fed into the general power grid.

✓ Use of district heating:

  • The supply of peak loads at the RMCC is covered by district heating from a biomass cogeneration plant.

✓ Energy-optimized air conditioning and heating technology

✓ Insulation:

  • Lower heat consumption thanks to thermal insulation and multi-glazed windows.

✓ Use of natural light:

  • Lower electricity requirements for lighting, through the use of daylight. Daylight available in almost all conference rooms in the RMCC, 90% of the rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows for plenty of daylight.

✓ Monitoring:

✓ Consistently switching off unneeded devices/lighting

  • In addition, we also set an example for the conscious use of energy resources with our annual participation in Earth Hour at our event locations.
