Sektkellerei Henkel
Paul Bonatz was engaged by Otto Henkell to build new Sekt (sparkling wine) cellars in a neo-classicist style at "Henkellsfeld" between 1907 and 1909. The result was a group of modern structures forming what is a three-storey "Palace of Sekt". Although the structural complex of the Bonatz plan includes features of baroque palaces, its idea, intention and realisation leans on the Italian architect Palladio. The austerity of the three-wing facility with its cour d'honneur is offset by a curved arcade. This arcade also reflects the influence of Palladio, but Zais's straight-line Kurhaus arcades were also a welcome source of inspiration.
The wings and their corner pavilions, extending forwards, provide the sides of the three-side cour d'honneur in front of the building expressly for promotional purposes.
The plans for the Sekt cellars also comprise the enormous lettering on the roof for advertising purposes which was an integral part of the architectural competition.
