Schloßplatz 6
The new City Hall was built in the historical city centre between 1883 and 1887. At the time there were nine buildings on the "island" between Marktstraße and Marktkirche, including the Koppensteinsche Hof. In 1868, it was purchased by the city to house the City Hall from the Senior Forestry Councillor Dr. Dern. The other eight buildings were torn down.
The professor of architecture, Dr. Georg Ritter von Hauberisser, known for his design of the City Hall in Munich, was awarded the contract to plan the new City Hall, which he designed in the style of German Renaissance.
During the Second World War the artistically designed front façade was largely destroyed and was given only a greatly simplified reconstruction. During the reconstruction, historical sections such as the arched entrance hall, the staircase and the broad hallway of the first storey were preserved.
