Marktkirche
Schloßplatz 4
The five-tower Marktkirche is the successor building to the Mauritiuskirche, which was destroyed by fire in 1850. Its exterior walls were judged as no longer load-bearing and were thus considered unusable for restoring the interior. Due to a space shortage the Marktkirche was not built at the former location of the Mauritiuskirche, but on the open square Neuer Markt. Drafted by the Senior Councillor Carl Boos as the Nassauischer Landesdom (Cathedral of Nassau), this church, the oldest in the city centre, has remained Wiesbaden's main church to this day.
It is designed in the Gothic pointed arch style following to the aesthetic ideas of Classicism in claystone technique. The Classicist feelings are reflected most in the balanced west façade, while the Gothic forms are visible especially on the towers. The Wiesbaden ceramic workshop of Jacob Höppli manufactured the decorative elements of the Marktkirche in series.
