Gutenbergschule
Mosbacher Straße 1
The plans for the construction of the Gutenbergschule as a Volksschule (providing eight year primary education) ran into obstacles from 1899. Because the Poet district was created for residential buildings in response to the increasing population, the building of a school was not welcomed¯especially as the town houses were limited to a height of 14 metres while the school building was supposed to be 18 metres tall. In the end, however, the school was built according to Felix Genzmer's plans in two stages, 1901-03 and 1903-05.
In 1933, the building was redesigned to house two secondary schools, a Gymnasium and a Realgymnasium. During the Second World War the southwest wing was destroyed and, in 1949, reconstructed according to a more simplified design. In 1955, after the humanistic Gymnasium moved out of the building, only the Realgymnasium with its emphasis on the natural sciences and modern languages remained.
