Blücherschule

Blücherplatz 1

The middle of Commander District is Blücherplatz in whose centre is the Blücherschule. It is one of Felix Genzmer's most important school buildings, erected in 1896/97. He used various materials for the building: grey natural stone for the ground floor, red brick for the upper storeys and the gable, yellow sandstone for decorations and accenting the sections of the building.

The school building has many ornamental forms whose models were crafted by the Cologne sculptor Degen and which were made by the Wiesbaden sculptor Schill. The roofing tiles on the northern wing are in various colours and are still in the original pattern.

After the Second World War, the southern wing was given a new, simpler roof and a shed dormer was added. Genzmer was inspired by the architectural forms of the Flemish Renaissance whose elements he modified with his own ideas. Even at the time of its creation the school building attracted attention and was considered a standard-setting structure.
